Snowshoeing Crater Lake

To celebrate MLK Day (and an extra day off for Adventure Dad), we went snowshoeing on Monday.  And since it was one of the free admission days for National Parks, we further decided it was the right time to check out Crater Lake in the snow.  We are always a bit hesitant to take our Boys to the snow, partly because it is so much work, but also because Adventure Boy O really, really, really doesn't like to be cold.

When we first mentioned getting them their own snowshoes, though, both Adventure Boys got so excited we thought it was worth a try.  And, we figured, if they didn't like it, at least we would have had the chance to get outside and see a beautiful lake in the snow.  Boy are we glad we took the chance!  They felt like such big boys, strapping on their own (adorably tiny!) snowshoes and walking around like Mom and Dad.
It only took Adventure Boy O a couple minutes to figure out how to walk without catching his toes in the snow, and then he was off!  Adventure Boy E never quite got the hang of it and would fall every few steps if he wasn't holding on to one of our hands.  Since he's our snow-loving boy, he still came up smiling, though!  We probably only covered over 1/4 of a mile before the Boys started getting tired and we headed back, but what a glorious 1/4 mile it was!

Stopping to admire the view, falling to make snow angels, striking off through untouched snow just to make fresh tracks... smiles and laughter made it all so worth it!  Adventure Baby was even cozy enough to fall asleep in the backpack!

When we got back to the car, our Adventure Boys were excited to see some people sledding off the roof of one of the buildings near the parking lot.  Since they were sliding down the snowbank on their bums, we unloaded the sled and Adventure Dad took the big boys for one long sled ride while I nursed Baby.  By all accounts, the conditions were just right and the sled flew down the trail past even where we snowshoed to!  After Dad pulled the Boys all the way back, O wanted to go again and flew off all by himself!  It was such a joy to see him enjoying the snow and has given us hope for all future cold weather activities.
