Leaf Rubbing (and Hammers)

Sometimes the best laid weekend adventure plans are foiled by torrential rains and a leaking water heater.  What is an adventure mom to do?  Encourage her boys' artistic side by teaching them how to do leaf rubbings, of course!

Rubbings are one of the easiest art projects to set up.  All you need are some leaves, plain paper, and crayons with the paper torn off.  Honestly, the most annoying part of this was tearing the paper off the crayons, but fortunately Adventure Boy 2.0 liked this part the most, so I set him to the task.  It definitely took some hand-eye coordination and was a little bit frustrating for my 2 year old, but my 4 year old loved it!  He asked for me to make several "designs" for him out of the leaves and then we would tape a piece of paper over the design and he would do the rubbing.

We discovered that our table has enough texture in it to create a pattern all it's own which was kind of cool, but the cracks in between the boards were annoying, so we got out some cookie trays and composed our designs on them.  Adventure Boy 4.0 even delved into the scientific method a bit by hypothesizing which side of the leaf would show up best in a rubbing - the front or the back.  Our conclusion was that we couldn't tell a difference.  While my older boy and I enjoyed composing designs and creating leaf rubbings, my 2 year old only did one and then resumed peeling the paper off the crayons.  Oh well!
After we tired of leaf rubbings, I decided to unleash their inner boy by bringing out the hammers.  I had seen on Pinterest you could transfer color by hammering leaves on of paper, and I thought it looked like the perfect project for my Boys.  And I have to say, they were both much more enthusiastic about using the hammers than they were the crayons.  Naturally.

We moved to the garage floor so as to not damage our table with the happy hammering, and while it wasn't Pinterest-perfect, it did entertain them, and the color really did transfer, which was kinda cool.  All in all, not a bad morning of creating!

Definitely fridge-worthy!
Happy Adventures!
